Spontaneous Song for Parents Who Have Lost a Child

Posted by: Bob Kauflin In: Spiritual Gifts| Worship God08 Conference

Jon Payne is a worship pastor at the Sovereign Grace church in Gilbert, AZ. On the last morning of the WorshipGod08 conference he did a great job leading us in corporate worship. One of the songs he led was Glorious and Mighty, which I posted on here.

While preparing, Jon sensed that God wanted to minister through prophetic song specifically to parents who had lost a child. This was his introduction and the song he sang that morning:

Over the years I’ve noticed that these songs often come at just the right time. After the conference I learned that there was a young mom in attendance who had lost her first child two years earlier. She could only go to one session and had planned to go Friday night, but couldn’t make it. She stayed up late that night talking with her mother-in-law about some recent struggles she had faced working through the loss of her baby. When she came in Saturday morning, she had no idea that God would address her situation specifically, reminding her of his knowledge, comfort, and sovereignty.

Of course, any spiritual gift is simply the overflow of the ultimate love God lavishly demonstrated at the cross of Calvary. But God meets us in our need and is always eager to show that he is a “very present help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1).

If you know someone who has lost a child, feel free to pass this on. More importantly, remind them that we serve a God who is intimately acquainted with our ways (Ps. 139:3), who never slumbers nor sleeps (Ps. 121:4), and who causes all things to work together for good for those who love him (Rom. 8:28).

My wife and I lost our first child on September 15 of last year. My wife had a completely normal labor and delivery, but when our daughter was born, she crashed and never took a breath. It rocked us. Without God’s grace, there’s no way to cope. But He has been SO faithful. I was actually holding our friends’ infant daughter when Jon started singing this song. My wife and I held each other and that little girl and wept and praised our Father. It was another step in experiencing His healing, mercy, and boundless love. We are now preparing to welcome our son into the world next month. It seemed like he’d never get here, and now it’s just around the corner. His name will be Jude, which means ‘Praise.’ Praise the Lord!

It is wonderful to see the work of God in this way. It is good to see such a wonderful example of God’s gifts to the church.

It is a marvel that God gives us gifts to bless the church.
Glory be to the Lord God, Almighty!

I pray this video will benefit many others who here it, including my dear friends, Matt and Lizzy.

  • Bob Kauflin: Ted, I felt bad about using the word "stupid" as well. I mentioned it when I got up later. Just the first word that came to mind...
  • Ted Nieto: When this happens, as it has to all of us from time to time, it is good to take it in stride and move forward. The congregation will see your humanity
  • Ted Nieto: I serve as pastor of worship and find it quite refreshing that there is a biblical science, if you will, in the way we as Christians approach Praise a
