Song List for Together for the Gospel Conference

This past week I had the privilege of leading worship in song for the Together for the Gospel conference in Louisville, Kentucky. What a joy it was to lead over 5000 attendees, mostly pastors, in worshiping our great Redeemer for his matchless work of redemption. They came from a variety of denominations and churches, mostly from the United States, but from as far away as Australia and India. (I have a story about the pastor from India at the end of this post)

A number of people asked me for the song list and lyrics to the songs we sang. Most of the hymns we sang were public domain, but a few were Sovereign Grace Music and songs by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty, two of the most gifted worship song writers of our day. Below is the list of the songs. Clicking on the title will take you to a site where you can hear the melody we used. Clicking on a message title will take you to the T4G site where you can download the message, which I highly recommend you do, whether or not you were at the conference.

In a few days, I’ll add where the music can be found in various hymnals. I’m also planning on writing a post about what I learned from leading worship at T4G.

The Rest of the Story
The first night of the conference, Mark Dever gave a prize to the person who came the farthest to attend T4G. A couple guys from Australia were beat out by a pastor from India. Unfortunately, C.J. informed Mark later that evening that Australia is actually 2000 miles farther from Louisville than India. We had a good laugh at Mark’s expense, who apparently knows his theology better than his geography. But the next morning, the Indian pastor who won the prize came up to me with the prize in his hand. His name is Christopher Hukkeri. He said he wanted to return the prize because by rights it wasn’t his. He said he had a hard time sleeping the previous night because he really hadn’t come the farthest distance. I was deeply moved by his integrity and humility. I told him that he could keep the prize and that we were very grateful and honored that he came to the conference. He then showed me the Bible he was carrying, which was in his native tongue. He was the translator. He had spent fourteen years laboring on it so that his people could hear the good news of the Gospel in their own language. In addition, he told me that he had been fired from his position as a teacher in India because he refused to teach evolution. His story apparently is part of the new film “Expelled.” What a privilege to serve men like Christopher who lay down their lives daily for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Lots of these links are not working, at least for me: none of the speakers’ links work; none of the Tuesday melody or lyrics links work except for lyrics to Deep, Deep Love; under Wednesday the links for Come Ye Sinners melody and My Song Is Love Unknown melody are not working. Everything is okay under Thursday except for the speakers. Thought you’d want to know!

My hubby got me a copy of Come Weary Saints at T4G and I am loving it, especially Hide Away. Thank you for all you do!

    Bob,

Thank you for the humility you displayed in leading us at the conference. Your willingness to lay aside all potential “stumbling blocks” (musical preference, physical expression, etc.) so that of all those gathered might be able to glory in the gospel of Christ was a powerful example to me. Your teaching and your example have been a tremendous means of grace to me and, subsequently, the church I am privileged to serve as worship pastor. Keep on truckin,’ my friend.

    Josh,

Thanks for your kind and meaningful words. Actually, I thoroughly enjoyed every song we sang at T4G, and I’m not sure I was less physically expressive than normal…but it was simply a privilege to serve those who came.

    Lindele,

Thanks for the heads up. I think the links are fixed now.

I enjoyed the songs also, and was moved to tears several times, particularly during, “How sweet and awesome is this place.” I had not heard it before, and my soul was stirred to cry again with thankful tongue, “Lord why was I a guest?”

Bob, I just want to thank you for the humble and powerful way you lead in worship at T4G. I go for the messages, but both years have edified and strengthened by the worship music.

Two things. One, thank you for leading us in worship, it was really a blessing. Two, I have a friend from India studying with me here at school, and he has the same heart that you described of the man at the conference. It just encourages me to see brothers like them who are on the other side of the world with such sensitive hearts and a passion for the Gospel.

    Hi Bob,

Just wanted to give a big thanks from Brisbane, Australia for posting up the talks online for free! Even though we only hear snippets of what’s happening I’m greatly encouraged that the messages given at this conference can be shared by an audience you may not have considered earlier!

So thank you again and I pray that more great talks will be available in the future!

    Bob,

I wanted to thank you for serving us at T4G by playing and leading us in worship. It was a blessing to sing many of the old hymns with thousands of our brothers. So thank you for serving us.

Above I noticed it said one song was “How Sweet and Aweful is this Place.” I am sure it was just a typo, but I think you meant “Awesome.”

    Thank you again!

    SDG,

    Greg

Bob, thank you for leading with humility, for the choice of songs we sang (what an amazing experience to sing with so many the praises of God), and for sharing the story about this dear pastor in India. (We’re going to read this in our corporate prayer meeting and pray for this man.) In light of the preaching about Christ’s atonement for our sins, I think the singing highlight for me was “And Can It Be.” Oh, the wonder of our sins being forgiven! But I also want to thank you for the beautiful and moving tune you wrote for “Oh, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus.” Thank you for using your manifold gifts to bless the church.

    Bob,

I, too, wish to add my voice to the others here in expressing my thanks to you for the humble way in which you served us by leading worship at T4G. You introduced us to some great hymn texts that are so readily accessible, I hope they soon become standards in our worship services.

BTW, to Greg who though “aweful” was a typo and should have been “awesome,” Bob has it correct as “aweful.” The word in the original old english means “full of awe” and not the degeneratted meaning of “terrible” or “bad” as we presently define “aweful.” I hope we maintain the original word and simply explain the meaning to our people.

    Dear Bob,

Thank you for igniting love and passion for singing hymns that are centered on the Gospel truth of Christ in me. With all the contemporary music and songs, I have long lost embracing beauty and exellence Christ-centered hymns of old and their message carry within. Thank you and praise God for your music and ministry.

    Bob:
again, so very thankful for you. “Sweet and Aweful” was just that. Thank you so much for the time, thought and prayer that went into choosing those songs!

    Bob,
Again thanks for you leadership at T4G. And thanks for putting your thoughts down in the book “Worship Matters”. It is one of the most helpful things I have read.

Also, in case you haven’t come across this song by Matthew Westerholm, “The First Place”. The lead sheet is here:

It is a great expansion on Col. 1:15-18

    Bob,
Thanks for showing us how worship can and should be done. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed T4G08. The only thing I would have changed was the amount of singing–we just didn’t sing enough. Thanks for the simplicity. Thanks for the depth. Thanks for the hard work. You led me to the Throne.

    Bob,
Loved the music. The worship was awesome. Thank you!
Also, thank you for your books. The worship leader in my church and I are going to read it together and discuss it. Looking forward to having you guide us in our thoughts about worship for the weeks to come.

    All,

Thanks for your encouraging words. It was a joy to serve in any way at the conference. It was a joy just to be there!

  17. Aaron Campbell April 22, 2008 at 4:38 PM #

    Bob,

I want to add my gratefulness for your leadership, as well. Moreover, I want to comment on the unity present in the room as we sang. While I enjoyed the simplicity of the accompaniment and the harmony from those singing, that was not my favorite part. The joy and vibrancy came from the one thing everyone had in common- Jesus. I thought the room might explode with joy as we sang In Christ Alone and And Can it Be. Praise God that we have such an incredible reason to sing!

    – so what’s the word on the recording?

  18. Will Jackson April 23, 2008 at 7:50 AM #

    Bob,
Thank you so much for leading us into the Word and directing us to Christ through music at T4G. It is amazing how just a hymn book and a piano can do so much with the right attitude and spirit. Also, thanks for listing the songs especially for those of us who know a few lines but not the title. Speaking of, didn’t we sing a song called “Amazing Love, And Can it Be?” I recognize it in the ones listed above. That was one of my favorites of the week.

  19. Paul April 23, 2008 at 10:04 AM #

    Bob,

Thank you so much for leading us last week in song! I found myself in tears many times throughout by not only the soul stirring lyrics, but also by how complimentary your piano playing was. The melody, lyrics, and accompaniment worked so well together that I was never distracted by your obvious skill or anything else for that manner. Thanks again!

By the way, I didn’t see “And Can It Be” on the list. That hymn was so powerful with all of those men singing, and to be honest I have never had the priveledge to sing it before! God bless you brother and thanks!

  20. Bob Kauflin April 23, 2008 at 10:19 AM #

    Will and Paul,

Thanks for your encouragement and pointing out that I left off And Can it Be. We added it at the conference so it wasn’t in my original list. I made the correction in the post.

  21. Jamie Brown April 23, 2008 at 6:41 PM #

I second Aaron’s question — how did the recording turn out?

  22. Bob Kauflin April 23, 2008 at 7:05 PM #

    Jamie and Aaron,

Mum’s the word…I’ll keep you posted.

Bob… You thought this thread was dead… We’re still waiting for more info on that recording. It sounds great on the t4g web site!

I look forward to hearing more!

  25. Bob Kauflin August 7, 2008 at 10:58 PM #

    Todd,

We’re still working on it! Thanks for asking about the recording.

  26. Aaron Campbell August 29, 2008 at 12:04 PM #

    Bob,

I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of an arrangement or scoring of “How Sweet and Aweful is the Place.” I’d love to introduce it with a choir to our church soon.

    Joyfully His,

    Aaron Campbell

Found it in the Trinity Hymnal. Had to order it, but I’m sure I’ll find a wealth of other hymns to learn and teach as well.
