Craig,

Thanks for stopping by.

We currently share the Lord's supper once a month, using trays of cups and small crackers. We have about 1700 people present in each meeting, so at this point it's a matter of sharing communion in a wayt that doesn't take up the entire meeting. We're planning on teaching on the sacraments in the near future, and are talking about distributing the bread and cup a different way; perhaps breaking one loaf, sharing a cup in small groups, etc.

We've done different things musically. Currently, we play instrumentally while the elements are being passed out, and then invite everyone to join us in singing when we've shared the Lord's supper. We have also sung a cross-centered song, often new to the congregation, and then invite them to join with us. We generally sing one or two more songs after communion that also help us respond to Christ's work on the cross.

Bob,

How does Covenant Life administer the elements since it is a large church?
How often does the church conduct the Lord's Supper?
What are some musical ideas you have used recently to cause a focus upon the cross, Calvary, and the celebration of corporate meal?

Thank you for your reply,
Craig

At my church I'd say most of the time we will split into groups, share communion and pray together.

Practically; we have a table up the front of the church with glasses of wine (in our case grape juice) and bread in which normally a leader will come and get a glass and bread and get a small group together. It doesn't take long at all to get a group together, we normally are finished with 5-10 mins depending how the Spirit leads.

That is the way we take communion most of the time.

I'm curious as to your 'process' of taking communion, and any music or other that happens during this time.

In our church, folks come forward to receive the elements. Traditionally we have had worships songs being played quietly for folks to sing to.

There is this delicate balance between focusing on what is going on, and not distracting with 'extra' stuff.

I wish we had two rooms, folks come forward repenting in one room, receive the elements and walk into the next room, worshipping with joy after receiving grace.

Hi Bob,

Nice article, Im sure it would have been an awesome morning at Church.

I'm interested to know how often you share communion at your Church and how often you think it should be done?

At my church we try not to let things to become a ritual and so we do communion once a month.

As well as sharing communion, as part of this command "do this in memory of me" we have a meal together, just like the Apostles did at the last supper. We become family when we remember Christ through fellowship.

I don't know how churches fit everything in on Sunday when they have communion every week anyway.
